Tech for Good and World Cancer Day

Tech for Good

and World Cancer Day

We all know that tech can be bad for us - enter the Terminators.

Or in more realistic terms…

‘Internet addiction’, depression linked with social media use in adults, encroaching and persistent data collection, security threats and the feeling of burnout by over stimulation.

But while our attention spans and political systems might be at risk from algorithmic addictions and the applications of AI, tech can certainly be a force for good too.

As our world becomes more tech-enabled by the day — with our future depending on the innovation and collaboration that happens now — at Tusko we feel it’s important to highlight the good that tech can do, and support the positive applications of science and tech.

We were heavily inspired by our work with Science Creates - a Bristol-based deep tech ecosystem connecting scientists and engineers with entrepreneurial partners, and venture capital funding.

It’s an inspiring set up - partnering sizeable funds and purpose-driven investors with cutting edge research.

We created a suite of films to portray their mission as an epicentre for scientific advancement, right here in Bristol.

Science Creates team.

One of the projects we became aware of whilst filming with Science Creates was CytoSeek - a company developing cell therapies that are set to make a huge impact on the way we treat cancer, with enhanced abilities to fight solid tumours. Amazing work.

The tech behind it - Artificial Membrane Binding Protein technology - was developed by Professor Adam Perriman and his team at the University of Bristol. CytoSeek’s mission is to commercialise these discoveries, and make the technology viable for use in cancer treatment.

CytoSeek is a prime example of what Science Creates exists to achieve — greater support and distribution of the groundbreaking discoveries being made by scientists, making them viable and accessible to the world.

Following on from our work with Science Creates, we’ve been thinking about how important it is to highlight these Tech For Good stories through our work as an agency.

Perhaps because it was World Cancer Day on the 4th of February, and we’ve been thinking about just how many people we know have been affected by this disease in one way or another. When it’s you or your family member facing this illness, you often end up researching all sorts of existing therapies with more interest and urgency, as well as the ones at the frontier of science exemplified by CytoSeek.

As a socially conscious marketing agency, we also can’t help but get angry from time to time about the wider state of affairs when it comes to our health, considering the fact that our environment (and the world of big business that affects it) is becoming more carcinogenic all the time.

We are living in a world that causes widespread cancer as a direct result of rapid growth, and unrestrained industry.

From highly processed food, to rising air pollution levels, to the increasing presence of ‘forever chemicals’ in our bodies, and cancer-causing micro-plastics.

How is it that destroying our environment and our bodily health is still legally viable, and vastly profitable?

So as we've seen, tech isn't all bad. If we can kick cancer's arse with tech, then we’ll be able to fight back against one of the leading causes of death and illness in modern times.

More revolutionary treatments are needed to improve treatment outcomes. And our work with Science Creates opened our eyes to just how much innovation is happening, and also what can be achieved when innovators like CytoSeek get the funding and support they actually need.

This is one of our drivers behind working with Tech For Good enterprises. With all the capital and power coming through innovative enterprises at the forefront of what’s currently possible, a lot of good can be done.

We need powerful campaigns to bring the public’s, as well as investors, understanding of the key issues along. We need wider commercial support for innovations in cancer prevention and treatment. And we need better storytelling around the role that tech plays in our lives.

This is where Tusko is hoping to fit into the global picture.

Our core purpose as a marketing agency is to craft campaigns around powerful stories, to empower and uplift the people who need it most.

And when our work has involved raising awareness around the most exciting and impactful inventions at the cutting edge of cancer treatment, it’s been a deep honour.
