LADY LIFERS: WOMEN BEHIND BARS

A feature documentary Produced and Directed by Jake J. Smith.

Logline

A former soul singer fights for justice after decades in prison, using music to challenge life without parole and give voice to women left behind.

Overview

For the first time in 30 years, a film crew gains rare access to Pennsylvania’s maximum-security women’s prisons.

Inside, a group of women serving life without parole form a band. Led by former soul singer Naomi Blount, they transform grief into music - and music into protest.

Though Naomi never took a life, she must express remorse she does not feel in order to have any hope of freedom. As their songs echo beyond prison walls, lawmakers and activists begin to listen.

The question remains: Can a voice be powerful enough to change the law?
